My long-term research goals are to determine the novel molecular mechanisms of carcinogenesis mainly in human esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, and to explore the new protocols for cancer treatments. Various research approaches have been applied for achieving the goals:

  1. To explore the novel application of different types of synthetic compounds and traditional Chinese medicines for cancer treatments, with the consideration of new combinations to the routine chemotherapeutic protocols;

  2. To investigate the molecular mechanisms of different synthetic compounds and traditional Chinese medicines for their anti-cancer actions.

  3. To establish and characterize tumor cell lines of different tissue origins from Chinese population. The availability of well-characterized tumor cell lines ensures the sources and qualities for the subsequent in vitro molecular and pharmacological studies on different tumors;

  4. To establish the nude mouse-xenograft models of different tumors as the tools for the subsequent ex vivo studies on various human tumors in pharmacological, histopathological and molecular aspects;

  5. To apply various modern molecular biology techniques for studying the primary tumors, their xenografts and the corresponding tumor cell lines on their genomic alterations, gene expression profiles and novel candidate genes involved in molecular carcinogenesis.

  6. To correlate the clinicopathological features of the primary tumors with their molecular characteristics.
